Often, we have to explain the distinction between branding and marketing, so we thought we’d share some highlights to help you get familiar with the differences:

Definition of Marketing: the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising.

Marketing is known as a “push” tactic. It pushes out a message about your product or service to entice a monetary purchase. EX: “Buy my stuff, ‘cuz it’s awesome and will solve all of your problems.”

VS.

Definition of Branding: a process that includes creating an image/logo supported by a clear, consistent, and compelling message in the minds of consumers that establishes unique distinction in the marketplace which attracts and retains loyal clients.

Branding is a “pull” tactic. Ideally, it happens all around your marketing – before, during, after, ongoing… WHY? Because branding is about building a recognizable memory regarding your products/services even when you aren’t directly asking for a purchase. This is how you build trust and confidence in the marketplace.

Quality Branding takes time and is built on deep-rooted business goals and strategy:

  • Clearly stated CORE BRAND VALUES and UNIQUE DISTINCTIONS
  • Consistent messaging that establishes CONFIDENCE and CONNECTS with your ideal client
  • Compelling services & branded products that STAND OUT in your marketplace
  • Ongoing research to determine what your target market is struggling with and how you can provide a quality SOLUTION

Marketing may contribute to a brand, but the brand is bigger than any particular marketing effort. The brand is what remains after the marketing has swept through the room. It’s what sticks in your mind associated with a product, service, or organization—whether or not, at that particular moment, you bought or did not buy.— The Tronvig Group

While branding is not simply an image, your logo is one of the most important pieces of any brand. When you get this part right, you open up opportunities, but if you get this wrong, you may never get a second chance…
